It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of George Alexander Ochrym, founder of Consultec, who departed this world in Toronto on 9 May 2025.
Born in Ukraine, he emigrated to Canada after the war where he graduated in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1959. After a few jobs, he settled in at St. Lawrence Cement (Holderbank) Engineering where he eventually became Chief Engineer, Building Department, and gained invaluable experience managing projects for the cement industry. In 1975, he founded Consultec, which went on to become successful mid-size EPCM firm for the minerals processing sector. A serial entrepreneur, George had many diverse business ventures in Canada, USA and Ukraine ranging from building materials, property development and storage facilities. He prided himself on his professionalism and discipline, which were reflected in both his casual and professional endeavours. This was accompanied by a deeply positive outlook, a good heart and a fondness for meals with close friends.
He will be deeply missed at Consultec.

A Year End Reflection
For 49 years, Consultec has been at the forefront of project delivery and engineering for the minerals sector, delivering quality project services across Canada, USA and Latin America. From our original skillsets in the global cement industry, we have managed to migrate the many years of hard earned industrial experience to other minerals, metals, and precious metals. No matter the specific mineral sector, our goal remains the same: to bring a project investment idea to life with technical excellence and to give our clients peace of mind with timely delivery and cost effectiveness.
In this post-pandemic age of large, multi-national organizations, it is becoming increasingly rare to find boutique EPCM firms that execute work under one roof with a team accustomed to working with one another.
As we prepare to celebrate our 50th anniversary in 2025, we commit to:
– A renewed focus on Process Design with a new team of experienced engineers and metallurgists
– Ongoing development of Equipment Procurement processes
– Executing most Engineering in-house without relying on disjointed subcontracts
– An eye on Constructability, Costs and Schedule.
Wishing all our partners, clients and friends a happy holiday season and a prosperous 2025.
